Unit 2 at Susquehanna Nuclear Power Plant Begins Scheduled Refueling and Maintenance Activities

Activities Occur Every 24 Months, Allowing the Unit to Generate Carbon-free Electricity 24/7/365 Without the Need to Refuel

BERWICK, Pa., (March 20, 2023) – Susquehanna Nuclear, LLC announced today that operators at the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station (“Susquehanna”) safely disconnected the Unit 2 reactor from the electrical grid to begin its regularly scheduled refueling and maintenance period. The unit’s refueling occurs approximately every two years and helps ensure that the station runs safely and efficiently, generating reliable “always on” carbon-free power. The Unit 1 reactor is set to continue regular operations during this time.

“These carefully planned and executed activities are scheduled for each unit on alternating years, to ensure that power continues to be generated and available while one unit is undergoing planned maintenance, inspection and refueling,” said Derek Jones, Plant Manager. “Once the activities are complete, the unit will be able to operate for up to 24 months without the need to refuel.  Our goal is to complete the maintenance and refueling activities on time and with zero injuries.”

Susquehanna’s employees, together with approximately 1,800 supplemental workers, are scheduled to perform approximately 10,000 maintenance activities while replacing about one-third of the unit’s fuel during this period. The influx of personnel will help boost the local economy as workers patronize local restaurants, stores and lodging and utilize services throughout the community.

The Susquehanna plant, located about seven miles north of Berwick, is owned jointly by Susquehanna Nuclear LLC and Allegheny Electric Cooperative Inc. and is operated by Susquehanna Nuclear. Its two units generate approximately 2,500 megawatts of carbon-free electricity, enough to power approximately two million homes. For information, visit www.susquehannanuclear.com.
