Susquehanna Steam Electric Station Unit 2 Resumes Generating Safe, Carbon-free Electricity Following Scheduled Refueling
Work completed will allow the unit to produce energy 24/7/365 without need to refuel; scheduled refueling and maintenance activities were completed safely
BERWICK, Pa., April 25, 2023 – Susquehanna Nuclear LLC announced today that the Unit 2 reactor at Susquehanna Steam Electric Station (“Susquehanna”) resumed generating safe, carbon-free electricity after being disconnected from the electrical grid to conduct scheduled refueling and maintenance activities.
Susquehanna’s employees, together with approximately 1,800 supplemental workers, safely completed approximately 10,000 maintenance activities while replacing about one-third of the unit’s fuel. These 1,800 workers helped boost the local economy by visiting local restaurants, stores and hotels and taking advantage of services throughout the community.
“Our proactive maintenance work will keep Susquehanna generating dependable, carbon-free energy safely and efficiently to meet the needs of our stakeholders, even during the most challenging of conditions,” said Derek Jones, Plant Manager.
Each of Susquehanna’s two reactors undergo planned refueling and maintenance once every 24 months on alternating years. As a result, Susquehanna, along with other nuclear plants, can supply reliable, “always on” power for up to 24 months without the need to refuel. Susquehanna schedules refueling and maintenance activities when seasonal temperatures are mild and power demand is lower to minimize market impact.
