Susquehanna Nuclear to Test Emergency Notification Sirens on Thursday, August 17

Sirens will sound at 11 a.m. for approximately three minutes; no public action required.

BERWICK, Pa. (August 11, 2023) — — Susquehanna Nuclear will test all sirens that are part of Susquehanna Steam Electric Station’s (“SSES” or the “Station”) Emergency Notification System (“EAS”) on Thursday August 17th at 11 a.m. During the test, all sirens within a 10-mile radius of SSES will sound in a steady tone for approximately three minutes.

After the sirens sound, local EAS radio and television stations will carry a message about the test. Local residents may receive notification calls on their land lines and/or mobile devices as part of Columbia County’s and Luzerne County’s use of the Code Red mass notification system.  Emergency notification features on mobile devices also may be activated during this test.  No public action is required during this test. In all cases, the sirens sounding is not a signal to evacuate, but rather a way to alert individuals to tune in to an EAS television or radio station for information and instructions.

A list of EAS stations can be found in SSES’ Nuclear Emergency Information Brochure, mailed annually to households and businesses within its Emergency Planning Zone (within a 10-mile radius of the Station), or online at www.susquehannanuclear.com/emergency-planning/.  More information regarding the Code Red mass notification system can be found on Columbia County EMA’s website at http://ema.columbiapa.org/ or Luzerne County EMA’s website at https://www.luzernecounty.org/191/Emergency-Management.
