Derek Jones

Plant General Manager

Derek Jones serves Susquehanna nuclear power plant as its plant general manager, a position he was promoted to following his successful service as station operations manager for nearly three years. He joined Susquehanna as accreditation program manager in early 2014 to assist the Station in its program accreditation renewal efforts, and provided oversight and support to the Operations and Training departments.

As plant general manager, Mr. Jones became responsible for the Operations, Maintenance, Radiation Protection, Chemistry, On-Line and Outage departments in early 2017. As a result, and for the first time in recent Station memory, all departments responsible for safe and reliable nuclear operations performance report directly to Mr. Jones.

As Susquehanna’s operations manager from 2014 until early in 2017, Mr. Jones ensured the safe and conservative operation of Susquehanna in accordance with existing procedures and operational standards. In this role, he was focused on improving leadership behaviors—a performance gap the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) had been interested in helping to close, and one he believed offered one of the best opportunities for performance improvement.

Prior to his arrival at Susquehanna, Mr. Jones served at the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant for more than 15 years, most recently as its operations manager. He received his senior reactor operator license in 2005 after beginning his nuclear career as an auxiliary operator.

Mr. Jones earned a bachelor of science degree in Applied Science and Technology, Nuclear Technology, from the Thomas Edison State College in Trenton, N.J.
